It's no secret: since about 1993, more than 450 young women and girls have been kidnapped, sexually abused, tortured, and killed in Mexico's Ciudad Juarez. While a myriad of factors contribute to the violence, one of the most significant causes is a grave imbalance in the value of life and self-actualization for males and females. With generous support of a Fulbright grant sponsored jointly by the U.S. and Mexico, from Mid-August 2007 through Mid-May 2008, I am living and working in Ciudad Juarez. My very exciting work includes interning full-time with the prevention services division of the Casa Amiga (House of Friends) center, an organization well-known for its professional and compassionate healing and legal services for victims of gender violence and their families, as well as courageous political advocacy for an end to gender violence and tireless gender violence prevention work in the community. In collaboration with Mexico's esteemed Colegio de la Frontera Norte (Institute of the Northern Border), I hope to serve Casa Amiga and the Juarez community by composing a case study of Casa Amiga's violence prevention programs.
